Hey Folks!
2013 is almost done. What a year! Even though one in my situation may chance to view 2013 as a terrible year I am inclined to think quite the opposite. Cancer is a disease and for my sins it choose me to host itself. I am fine with that. Not overjoyed mind you but better me that some kid.
I remember during the first couple weeks of learning I had cancer and realizing what I had. Then after an outpouring of kindness, prayers and great support from family, co-workers, church groups and friends I realized what I "really" had. It had been over just 5 months and I still cannot find the right words to express my gratitude to those that helped and supported me and Carolyn. I am not often at a loss for words. Every time I open a "get well card" tears well up in my eyes. As I said on several occasions I am yet to shed a tear feeling sad for myself. I have a wonderful life.
So I am really looking forward to 2014. I think it is going to be a great year. I meet with my oncologist on the 9th to go over our next steps. I am done with my chemo treatments and will be going on to a different treatment after I meet him.
My advice to everyone is to keep a positive attitude. Easy to say isn't it? We have so much to be thankful for. Don't take things OR family and friends for granted. Help someone less fortunate than you. Do whatever you can to make someone smile!!!!! It might be their only smile of the day.
Love you all,
Wayne
PS. Last supper of 2013, beans and wieners!!!! Life is GOOD!!!!!

On the Eve
Hi Everyone,
Just want to wish any followers a Very Merry Christmas. It has been an extremely tough year but thankfully I've had utterly awesome friends and families to help me on this journey. I am still recovering from my last session of chemo and I must say it has been the worst. Recovery has been slow and my back is aching. Hopefully that explains why I haven't been responding to you facebook messages quite as quickly. None of you have been far from my thoughts and thanks once again for the prayers and good wishes. They have carried me through tough times.
I could, and probably should continue to write for hours to let you all know what you have meant to me but I'll cut it short and once again wish you and all a wonderful Christmas season.
:)

Feeling Fine.............
Wednesday I had a great day and dinner at the office with the crew. Was really great to get out and see everyone who currently works with me here in Chipman and quite a few retirees. Like I said, great turkey dinner!!!!
Thursday was a trip to Sussex and a little shopping. Carolyn spent some of our Optimum points and I scored a few goodies.
My hip issue, although still present, hasn't bothered me too much even though I'm off the steroid. Getting around a bit better and am trying to get out each day before I get too shack happy.
Thanks to the guys n gals at the office.

Snow Day!!!!
Been a while but there isn't much new news to report. Had my Chemo on Thursday past and it really zonked me. Feeling better now though.
My hip is still an issue and I believe it is unrelated to my bone cancer. The oncologist is going to re-check my MRIs to see if there is a connection. I don't think he will find anything connecting. My family doc is also going to do some follow up. I do have a reprieve from the severe hip pain while I'm on the steroid after Chemo but that'll be gone in another day or two.
Xmas is getting nearer and like last year most of my shopping will be done online. Amazon is incredible with many items being shipped free of charge.
I have one more Chemo treatment before Xmas and hopefully the weather will cooperate.
Catch y'all later.

Ellie Mae
Today, Carolyn, Fido, Mr. Snickers and Isaid goodbye to Ellie Mae our precious little girl. Ellie was my first seizure as an Animal Protection Officer and enriched our lives as well as the hearts of everyone who knew her. Another piece of m...y heart shall be gone forever.
Ellie went to sleep right here in our kitchen. The last packmates she saw we ones that loved her deeply. Thank you so much to her vet, Leigh Ann and assistant Shauna who came over from Richibucto, to Lewis who stopped by to dig her resting place and to Art for helping Carolyn cover her up.
Ellie, Daddy's Girl, will be forever remembered.See More

It's the weekend and Alex's Birthday (actually the 25th). The hip issue is really still causing me a lot of grief. Has nothing to do with the cancer or back issues I've been having, it is purely muscular. I'll have to go to the doctor next week and hopefully get a anti-inflammatory that'll work. The steroid I've been taking after chemo works but it is best not to depend on a steroid for relief.

Down, not Out...............
Hello Everyone,
It certainly has been a while since I've updated my Blog. October 12th to be exact. Between the events of October 15th and my inability to get internet access I have some news to fill in.
First of all I'll take you back to October 15th. Carolyn and I were up early to take our two border collies to the vet. On our return I rested and once ready decided to go for my normal walk. Carolyn's sister Shyanne was there and after my walk I asked for my cane and actually walked halfway in and out of my driveway with little assistance. After that I sat down and rested. Shyanne went back to work. I then climbed the steps to go in and rest. When I got to the top step I collapsed. I lay on the deck having a hard time to get my breath and it took some time to get back into bed. I felt winded but not too bad.
The following day extra-mural came in to do the dressing change on my back and suggested that I go to Minto to get checked out. Once there and after having my oxygen levels checked and other tests completed I got to go ambulatory to the DECH. There I had a CT Scan and was moved to emergency for observation. A bit later things dramatically changed. I was moved to an area where they could keep a closer eye on me. The doctor then told me an embolism (clot) had caused my problems as it had moved into my lungs completely blocking one and 75% of the other. He also told me that if it moved further there was nothing they could do. I signed a DNR (Do Not Resuscitate) on his advice. He also suggested that I should call in any family.
But, I survived and was admitted into the DECH. I was transferred to Moncton City after a week or so for back surgery.
There were several visitors while I was in the DECH that I'd like to thank. I know there are several I've forgotten in my drug filled haze.

Of course my son Alex visited daily saving me from hospital suppers on several occasions. Last but not least my wife Carolyn who I couldn't imagine having to go through what I have without her by my side.
I catch up with more later. I am home now and continuing my recovery. Chemo later this week. I've been knocked down a few rungs on the recovery ladder but I'll continue to climb.

And a Wonderful Saturday be it to You All
Ay. The air had a bit of a Fallish bite to er today.
Big difference from yesterday when it was quite nice. A Great day today with three pretty decent walks up and down the sidewalk by home and sat outside for a bit enjoying the sun. Carolyn and I had a wonderful Easter Supper at Art and Phil's with Darlene, Kathleen and Meagan. Gotta love turkey. Also realized that it was the first time since June 4th that I had actually sat at the kitchen table to eat! It had been either in my own bed, a hospital bed, in a chair with a tray, in a car, once at Pizza Delight. No pain. It was great. As was the supper and of course Phyllis' deserts.
My Back Vack (gonna start calling it that since I think we'll be together for a while) was turned up a notch which is a good sign. The extra mural nurse said my back looked better. A little more pink which is what she wanted to see.
Carolyn and I stayed close to home today. Yesterday we went to Minto for a drive.
Still figuring out what I can and can't do without causing pain to my hip. I still believe my hip pain is completely unrelated to the cancer or back surgery. Mind you it is a lot better than it was this summer. I never would have been able to sit up at Art and Phil's table for an hour.
And yes, spoke to big sis Anita on the phone. She sounds great and sooooooo happy. She certainly seems to be on the same page as me. Her attitude was super. Really made me feel good.
Well I just talked turkey and I suspect over the next two days the rest of you will be Turkeying out. Or perhaps Hamming it up. Either way I hope you all enjoy. Catch you on the flip side. :)

The Thursday After
We had a great day yesterday other than aggravating my hip a bit. Gotta be more careful. I sat up way too long. WE had left for Moncton and The CT Scan at 7:30 am, got back home at noon and I tweeked my hip (sciatic). Then like a fool I never really gave it a break by sitting up most of the afternoon and then all evening. Watched "No Country for Old Men". Love that movie.
So today is the Thursday after and I got out for a couple good walks but have been horizontal when I ain't moving. The hip will eventually get stronger as the rest of my leg builds muscle.
Pretty uneventful last couple of days. My vacuum is still pumping away and extra-mural will be in tomorrow to change it. Great bunch of gals I tells ya!

Monday, Monday.........
Rainy Monday. I guess we were due for some rain.
Countdown to Wednesday and another CT Scan. It is always a nice drive through the Salmon River Road and down the 126 to Moncton. CT Scan scheduled for like 9:30 am. No FOOD 4 hours prior. I'll have to get up at like 4:30 am and stuff my face with cookies ( Thanx Sue :) ).
Rob, Lori and Sophie up for a visit and Lori brought some tasty treats. Sophie played with Fido for the longest time. Fido appreciated it for sure. I think he would have went with them but that is Fides. He is a super gentle dog UNLESS you want to come into the house.
Feeling great today. Sooooooooo great in fact I am going to do something, actually eat something for dinner that I haven't had in a long time, Mr. Noodles!!!! I know, I know. I won't need to eat salt again for 2-3 years but I have a craving. Leave me alone!
I unsubscribed from Bell TV and have been hooked up to Netflix for the last week or so. It'll take a little getting used to. No NB News which I miss. Terry Sequin in the morning. But it comes with a savings of almost $80 per month and I'm catching up on all the Degrassi Junior High episodes. Stephanie Kaye got drunk and went to the dance. Edge of your seat stuff.
May not get as much of a chance to exercise today. Carolyn says she don't mind cleaning my wheels though. Maybe one walk later. Took a few steps with my cane yesterday. Just a few. Bernadette MacFarlane who is our Office Manager with the NBSPCA donate the cane along with some other items her husband had when he was recovering from a back injury. It was really appreciated. Folks have been wonderful.
Okie Doke. Should I survive Mr. Noodle I'll post again soon. If not, then Carolyn will pass on the news. Later Everyone. Degrassi awaits.

Non-Eventful Eventfulness!
Howse that for a title?
Really been very mundane the last few days. After chemo there seems to be a bit of a lull. I'm a little more tired and generally the meds wear me down a bit. The belly needle especially. Affects my taste buds believe it or not. Some foods I cannot eat.
Went to see my back surgeon on Wednesday to get an assessment of this slow healing incision and he decided to vacuum the wound to help drainage and promote quicker healing. Sounds kinda gross but it actually is kinda cool. Cept I have to lug around this little pump all the time but hey. Its a conversation starter.
Was to the DNR office today for a visit and spent an hour with Colleen. Guys must have all been out "workin'".
Walked a couple times today actually. Beautiful time of year. Getting outside to enjoy the sun so if you see me outside, stop in to say hi.
Feeling great folks. CT Scan next week and another chemo on the 21st. Other than that we are all " Happy, Happy, Happy!!!

The Day After Chemo
Hey everyone. My third chemo session is complete and today I'm very very relaxed. Of course the steroid I'm on helps.
Next up will be a CT Scan in a couple of weeks to assess the effectiveness of the treatments and perhaps more chemo.
Yesterday was a long day. Carolyn and I left Chipman at 7:30 am and returned at 7:30 pm. The session went well and Carolyn stayed the entire day.
So the waiting game continues. Been doing some SPCA work, been wheeler walking for exercise and am getting a lot stronger. Really enjoy getting over to the office and joking around with the crew. That is one of the things I really miss. Whether in Miramichi at Air Ops or in Chipman at the District Office I'm very fortunate to work with such great crews. One of the things that is really helping with my spirits and recovery.
So everything is chugging along. Sorry I haven't been calling quite enough to my phone folks. Feeling fine!

Sunday, Sunday
What a beautiful day!
Since my last post on Thursday it has been quite uneventful. I guess I am just so looking forward to chemo on tomorrow. It ain't that bad but it kinda messes things up. Taste buds are like WTF?
Been to Tim's a couple times, been over to the office using my walker a few times, legs are getting stronger. My back incision is still slow in completely healing (due to the steroids and chemo) but has really improved so I feel good about that.
OK, always worried about losing weight when you have this disease. IT AIN'T BEEN A PROBLEM! Spare tire? Maybe a spare skidder tire!
So things are really great and I'll post again tomorrow night after I get back from chemo to let you know how things went (unless I'm really loopie).
Enjoy the rest of your Sunday everyone.

Thursday - Super Thursday
Rain held off today so I got a couple nice walks in. Tomorrow I think I'll go to the office and check on the moose count.
Told Carolyn I usually get up at 5 am and try to get back to sleep but I so look forward to the day I get excited and just stay up. Things are going well, Carolyn and Charlene with extra-mural are doing a great job looking after my back.
Supposed to have a few beautiful days weather wise so I'm going to take advantage of them. If I could sing, I would. Life is pretty darn good!!!

Alright. Another milestone!
Hang on! Hang on! You better sit down for the news!
I have enough strength in my legs to stand up and wipe my butt! Sniff! That IS big news although Carolyn refused to high five me afterwards.
Wow. What a great afternoon yesterday and great day today (more to come I hope).
I made it all the way over to the DNR Office today to see the crew but especially to see Jeff Robinson who works at our Regional HQ and is a survivor. Jeff is doing wonderful and returns to visit his oncologist and surgeon at 2 and 3 month intervals. All is good for him. A bit uplifting for sure. Most of the Resource staff were there as well as COs Randy and Greg. Colleen was there of course to. We had some great laughs and boy do I miss that. It is the best place to work and you seldom get up in the morning regretting having to go. same as Air Ops. Can't wait to get back!!!!!
Feeling great and waiting patiently for Monday and chemo (not, lol). I know it'll zonk me a little but it is just another step in the process of "Wayne Get Better"

Road Trip
Art and I took a road trip to Tim's in Minto this afternoon. First time in a couple weeks I've been away from the house. Great drive and noticed the leaves starting to change colour.
Did quite a lot of walking with my four wheeler. In and out of Art's paved driveway about 5 or 6 times. That was enough. I'm a little sore but that is expected when you are trying to build strength.
All in all a great day with an awesome boiled dinner to finish off meal time. Tomorrow I'll walk again and try to keep it up until my cardio and leg strength continue to guide my way to sweet freedom!!!!!
Joked with the extra-mural nurse that with all this back strengthening I almost forget about the lung and bone cancer. My back incision is healing but the steroids I'm taking slow the process. Kind of a catch-22 situation but everything looks good. Just taking things in stride right now and enjoying the good days. Fell asleep way to early a couple nights ago and paid for it the next day. I have my last meds at 10 pm and it is sure a struggle to stay awake until that time. The day wears on a person.
Anywho, the apple fritter was good, the coffee was typical Tim's (y'all know what I mean.) Thanks to Art for the escape.

Monday Morning Coming Down
BLAH!!!
Another wet day and I need to put some mileage on. May not be too bad though and hopefully I'll get a little break to get over to Art's nice smooth driveway to build some strength.
Everything else going alright though. Feeling pretty good and can hardly wait til next Mondays chemo session (sarcasm). More needles to the belly for a week afterwards.
I will be going somewhere today though. Lots of offers for a Tim's run n such and I'm up to it. Maybe to Doaktown! Carolyn can do the Dollar Store!
That's whats its come to!!! Groan!
Just kidding of course. I can't nor shouldn't complain. Hoping everyone has a Great Wekk Ahead of Them!!!

Back is healing up pretty good as extra mural is in every other day checking things out and changing dressings n such. Going to the can all by myself too. Moving around a lot better and looking to graduate to a better walker. Four wheel drive model that'll maybe get me out on the driveway in the fresh air.
Carolyn and Shyanne went to Fredericton to get groceries and other stuff we were in need of. Filled the Mazda and have to go back next week to pick up more. Carolyn has been kinda trapped here looking after me so it was great they got away today.
The boys from DNR came over and piled the rest of my wood. It is all ready now for Art and Carolyn to get into the basement to pike for the winter. Many thanks to the Guys!
Cutting short. Going outside for a few minutes.

Giddy as a Schoolgirl,,,,,, Gruntin' like a Hog
Haha! Bet that Title has y'all a tad confused. Well if you wanna read further It'll be quite self-explanatory. If you choose not to read further then you may indeed have chosen the wiser path Grasshopper!
Giddy (urban dictionary);
Giddy (urban dictionary);
"to feel extremely excited as if you just saw a rock star, crush, celebrity, that made u seem speechless or incompetent of acting normal."
This is exactly how I felt after sitting up on the edge of my bed tonight after I thought such a feat would have been next to impossible earlier today. And, I will repeat AND. I had to poop
This of course leads me to the gruntin' aspect of the title. "Does that really need an explanation?" Needless to say after a 3 day buildup Carolyn said there were turds that required their own area code.
So Wayne is happy, no, downright giddy!
Basically what led me here was the fact I was weaned off one of my medications which led to inflammation of a muscle group that when pressure was applied to it, caused EXTREME PAIN. Short term jabbing pain. Excruciating! After one day back on the medication, WOW, my recovery, slow as it may be, is back on track.
Have a Great Tuesday Everyone!

Race against the Clock
Hi Folks,
We are in the midst of getting me straightened out again. Over the last couple of days they have weaned me off one of my medications and that particular one was helping me gain strength. Now we're working to get me back on it until such a time I have the strength once again to walk comfortably on my own. So that is why I haven't been posting of been seen on facebook.
So I'm still here, just busy. And the more busy, the more tired.
Carolyn and I got off the merry-go-round directly on to the roller coaster. Carolyn doesn't like the roller coaster. Hopefully it'll come to a stop soon and we can get on the helicopter ride.

The 14th? Bah!
Getting boring isn't it?
Everything is going well. Like I said. Sloooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooow.
Friday the 13th blew by without much fanfare and we all woke up Saturday.
Back was sore today so It is a bit of a game to try to figure out what I'm doing to make it sore. Sitting up too much, not enough? More exercises? Less?
Well, I'll figure it out.

Another Day chug, chug, chugging along!
Hello again everyone.
Trying to post something up here every day but as this process of back recovery moves along there is very little new to report.
I'm continuing to use the walker through the house. Starting to sit up a bit more. It's just a lotta work and patience is the key.
So if you happen to see a day or two go by without an entry, DON'T PANIC!!!!.

A little loopie
New drugs after Chemo and I am a little loopie. Messes a bit with your belly (lot of excess gasses) and a bit of heartburn. Just throws you off. Taking one pill to counteract the effects of another pill. LOL
Anywho, feeling good nonetheless and had a visit from Extra-mural to change the dressing on my PICC line. Cleaned up my incision on my back which seems to be coming along decent.
Other than that just chugging along. Would like to get outside maybe later for some air. Beep if you are driving by and see me. Probably after supper if the Head Nurse gives me clearance.
Later folks.

Extra, Extra, Read all about it!
Hi Folks. Time for a little update.
Yesterday was a long day starting at loading my carcass into the
car at 8 am and heading for Moncton for my 2nd Chemo treatment. Of course I
tweaked my hip a little and that caused me some discomfort but all pretty well
went OK.
Got to Moncton Hospital and checked in at the Oncology treatment
level and waited my turn. Spoke to my Oncologist, Dr Abdel'salam, and we talked
about my progress etc.... Mass on my lung and one spot on my rib so nothing
new.
Carolyn in the meantime found me a cool cancer beanie to cover up
my semi-haired head. I may model it later.
The chemo treatment was expected to last until 7 pm so when my
surprise dinner showed up at 1 pm and Carolyn and I found it to be decent she
drove back to Chipman. Not much for her to do but watch them come change my IV
mixes so she came back to look after the dawgs and catch up on some other
stuff.
It wasn't long after she left when I fell asleep and stayed asleep
most of the afternoon. Carolyn came back shortly after 6 pm and when the
treatment finished up we drove home. Art came over to help Carolyn get me from
the car to the to of the steps and I was happy, happy, happy to get back into
my bed. A very long day.
Now I hope I don't offend anyone but some of you fine folks would
like to visit me here at home. I'm not a social butterfly but do love it when I
get visitors. That being said it is very difficult for Carolyn and I to
accommodate folks because of the dawgs. We have to corral them away in
bedrooms, bathrooms and kennels. It stresses them out also. My solution is that
as my back condition and strength improves I'd love to jump into the car and
take a drive to Tim's or even sit down Chipman for a half hour just to watch
the myriad of traffic. That would be appreciated oh so much. I'll let y'all
know when the boss gives me permission. Thanks for understanding. I certainly don't mean any disrespect to those who have given me so much strength.
Meanwhile, it is Tuesday afternoon and I'm feeling pretty decent. More needles today, thank you Carolyn Lemon.

Adventure Moncton
Second Chemo complete! Just got home after a loooooooooooooong day. Full update tomorrow as right now I am too pooped to write too much. Feeling fine.

A Man Again!
Well. For the first time in over a month I had enough strength and was painless enough to pee while standing up. I know, I know it may sound trivial but it is a high 5 moment here in the Burpee household (washed hands first BTW).

Sunny Saturday!!!
Looks like a beautiful autumn day gaining strength outside my bedroom window. I'll be outside this afternoon taking in the rays.
I haven't posted too much on the ole Blog in the last day or so as things have been moving along fairly well. With the staples out and me finally coming to the realization Rome wasn't built in a day, I can relax. And that is what I intend to do.
It has been great chatting with Georgina Wallace who of course has intimate knowledge with cancer and her never aging husband Fred. Well Georgina, you haven't aged either.
Also talking with Sheila Ferris and seeing what we can do to see that the Canadian Cancer Society can do to help with their programs and patient services. Sheila has made a phone call or two which is dearly appreciated.
Family too of course. Speaking to my sister Marjorie in Ontario and Anita in Saint John over the telephone. Some laughs, some tears and all good.
And to everyone on the demon FaceBook. The "likes", the comments, the messages and such. It all lifts my spirit in such a way I cannot begin to explain or be able to put it into words. THANK YOU ALL!!!
Scored a loaf of Phyllis' homemade bread yesterday. Hope she don't mind but I wanted, no needed to have a bologna sandwich. It was AWESOME!
It is nice having the best nurse in the world. She is my rock and also my "brain" when I get to being stoopid.
Have a great Saturday everyone!

The last spike - REMOVED!!!
Thank you Tracy Gilbert and Debbie Blyth for teaming up and removing the 48 staples from my back. NO, one of them didn't need to hold me down, Debbie got tied up in bloodwork and Tracy stepped in. Back home now and feeling great. Shyanne came up to help Carolyn get me up and down the steps and it was much easier than when I came home from last Friday. Feeling stronger and now I'm going to rest up, let my back settle, watch some Duck Dynasty.
Next Chemo is Monday in Moncton and I'm looking forward to it. Great bunch of folks at Moncton City. May even get over to visit Mario at the Dumont. Super nice guy. He's the one I had Alex pick up the Super Mario Cap for.
Have a great day everyone!
Hey, I even got over to the office and chatted with Kevin, Jody, Greg, Colleen and Donnie after coming from the Clinic. Best therapy ever.

Resting Up
Heya Folks,
Staples removed from my back tomorrow so I'll be having a quiet evening. This means of course driving to the nearest Emergency Department and waiting for how long? Hummmmmm,,,, maybe HOURS at the DECH? Perhaps Oromocto would be a better bet.
Anywho, things are chugging along and staples out is a good thing.
Big day tomorrow, lotsa stress, I'll be putting something up tomorrow night unless I'm mega-zoned outa it.
Have a great evening!!!

Not all Roses
Been a bit of a downer today after yesterdays Super Day. Pain that I thought had been had been rectified by surgery seems to have creeped back into the picture. May have been my own fault for doing a stretch that I wasn't prepared for but I'll talk to the surgeon on Thursday to see what's up.
Anyway, other than that, things are going well. Been up with the walker three times Monday and twice today. Managed to sit in the living room and watch some television for the first time in a month and will try again tonight perhaps OR maybe just recuperate and let my hip pain ease. Either way there will be minimal strain put on these old bones.
Have a great evening everyone.

Still Puzzled
I am still a bit puzzled at the Canadian Cancer Society and their lack of support. Am I missing something? Was I out taking a whiz when their rep can to my bedside offering what they could offer me and my family for services at this time of severe emotional crisis? Are they prohibited by some sort of doctor/patient privilege to approach the patient or family? Help me out here.
Every day people are diagnosed with cancer and every day people give thousands of dollars to the Canadian Cancer Society. At some point shouldn't it be understood that some of this money should trickle down to the struggling family in need of fuel money so they can travel to see their kin in the hospital? It is there. Five hundred bucks if you meet the criteria and KNOW ABOUT IT!!!
Like I said, maybe by some policy, oath, confidentially reason the CCS cannot directly offer assistance. I would expect that every Oncology Department in our hospitals would have a representative from the CCS to meet with the patient and/or family as soon as their diagnosis is confirmed and say. "I'm from the Canadian Cancer Society and here are the services we can offer you at this time that may help you through difficult period. It is up to you should you wish to take advantage. We are here to help you."
I must have been in the can. Perhaps if I direct my query at whoever is hauling in that 6 figure salary running the outfit he/she could help me out? I'll continue to research and hopefully come up with a reasonable explanation as to why this isn't happening. Can anyone out there shed some light?

Laaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaazy Sunday Afternoon
Made some great steps this morning. Out to the bathroom and back a few times with pretty good steadiness. Very encouraging!!!! As my Buddy Pierson and I would say "Little Victories".
I heard the fireworks last night, well what I could hear over Fido's barking! BAMM WOOF!!!! They went on like forever.
Every day I feel great. Even yesterday when I had a great deal of pain trying to walk Carolyn got me back down on the bed and told me I'm expecting too much of myself. She is right, as always. A days rest and ease into your muscle rehab. Just been over a week and there are 10 or so discs fused together with genuine Princess Auto parts!!!!
That by the way is another story!!!!
On the day of my surgery my timing got delayed from noon until late afternoon. When things finally came together and they wheeled me into the operating room I lay there with probably 10 surgical staff surrounding me. I looked at them and said I know why we were delayed. It is Thursday afternoon, this weeks sales flyers are out and we are way too close to Princess Auto for you guys to pass up a deal on pins, rods n screws! Then I went to sleep.
On Friday I awoke in my room. Of course I could barely move but was comfortable. I noticed Gary who was in the bed beside mine sitting over by the window reading. When he saw me he asked if I minded him looking through my Princess Auto catalog that was sitting on the window sill!!!!!!
THOSE !#%$#$%% !!!!

Best Dippy Dog EVER!!!!
Carolyn brought me a dippy dog and I have to say compliments to the chef!!!!!
A little bit of ketchup and then I was transported to a Utopia few get to visit.
Now, it is a memory. A little pointy stick broken in half wrapped up in a napkin. The moment is over but shall linger sweetly on my palate for me to choose when to let go.
Did I mention I like Dippy Dogs?

The Climb
I don't think Sir Edmund Hilary had a tougher final few steps to the pinnacle of Everest as I had climbing the 6 steps up to my back door. What I can tell you is that my triumph was as satisfying. Carolyn by by side with Art behind I repeated best foot up, secure, weak foot followed. Got to the top, turned the doorknob and I was inside my home.
I'm very, very weak and require a ton of physio. Mostly doing exercises from my back to strengthen my legs enough to walk. I can walk around the house with my walker and Carolyn beside me and hopefully by early next week I'll be able to walk the driveway. Steps are my nemesis right now. It'll come though.
Other than that yesterday was an amazing day. It is soooooooooo great being here in my own bed and seeing the Dawgs for the first time in a month. Carolyn is an amazing nurse. She is also amazing patient with me.
Funny thing is that through all this getting home and concentrating on healing my back we both kinda forgot about the cancer! I guess we are taking it one step at a time. Kinda weird but hey, we focus on what is immediate, my back.
I'm not sure how many disc they supported with screws and cross members but perhaps 8-10. I wanted to get a copy of the x-ray but when we got the ok to discharge it was forgotten.
So nice looking out MY window. Have a great day everyone.
DIPPY DOGS later today! WOOT!

Truck Still For Sale and Puppies, Yer Daddy is Coming Home!!!!
Maybe, just maybe, my lil truck Smokey may have a buyer. Someone looking anyway. I'm not picking up as many hounds as I used to with the SPCA and since she is a manual transmission I figured it was a good time to sell her and use the proceeds to get something Carolyn can drive too. She is third peddle challenged.
I didn't want to send anyone into a high speed wobble so be rest assured I am trading down from Smokey. From the vehicles I've looked at as a replacement I'll actually be saving a few bucks.
So perhaps you'll still see Smokey in my driveway for some time or perhaps something weird n wonderful. I'm just soooooooooo looking forward to getting back to my DNR job in Chipman and NBSPCA in the Northeast even on a limited basis.
I want to attend everything, I want speak to everyone, I want to share my experiences here at Moncton City and the Dumont. I'd kinda like some hair back too! But Jody Brown said "Humph, you got a pretty good shaped head"! Can't make fun of Sheldon anymore though.
I have a treatment next week and then another 21 days after. I also have a shot of a bone strengthening drug that is covered by Blue Cross (hello for optimum points) that I take every 28 days. Two more Chemo, assessment, then continuance.
Won't make the Olympics this year but..............
Have a great evening folks!
PS: Carolyn may have a one year old Border Collie who at times replies to the name of Mr. Snickers for sale really cheap. Ok free to a good home! As long as that home is nowhere near Red Bank. I'm sure if you checked Mr. Snickers head there is a tattoo 665!

Hump Day!!!
Another huge step forward. Literally!
Art and Phyllis were over and of course Phyllis brought
cinnamon stuff. Art said I was lucky any of it made it this far as between Greg
and Sam it usually doesn’t get the chance to leave the house. Carolyn over
again for her daily visit. She helped the physiotherapist and I do the stairs
twice just to show the proper method. We got that down.
Red Cross has my stuff in Fredericton ready. A walker and a
commode chair for home. I’m hoping Friday is the day. We have to be cleared by
Dr. Charest (Neurosurgeon) and Dr. Mo (Oncologist). If that is the case then I
may just have to come back in for treatments. Yeeeeeeee-Hawwwwww!!!!
So Hump day was huge. I am feeling really good.
It is mid-afternoon Thursday and Donnie and Jody paid a
great visit this morning. Perfect timing as Carolyn had lots of stuff to think
about in prep for my return to home.
Thanks to everyone again! The positivity that surrounds me
sustains my spirit. At some point I will explain my blog name “cancersaddened”.

Tuesday's Gone
Hey Everyone,
Fell asleep at supper but needed the rest. Last two days have been busy and tiring as physio has had me up and moving. Yesterday was great, today was greater. Took a couple of walks and am starting to build strength.
WHAT A MOMENT!!!!!
Got in the wheelchair and Carolyn took me outside. Totally wondrous and overwhelming feeling when we wheeled out from underneath the canopy of the Hospital entrance. I bent my head towards the sky and saw it (no glass) for the first time in 22 days just as a light breeze bathed across my face. You know what happened next.
I am healing, and asked the surgeon today about the tumour on my back to which he said he believes the radiation pretty well nailed it and although there were some remnants on the spine he felt it would very rare if it returned. WOW!
Roommates here are coming and going. Norbert has been here a bit longer and had close to the same surgeries I've had. He is managing well.
More physio tomorrow, possibly home for the long weekend? We'll see.
Catch y'all later. Have a great evening.

Monday, Monday, Monday,,,,,,, Monday, Monday , Monday!!!!!!
Have a great start to the work week everyone!
Feeling great this morning because.................................................... Carolyn is coming over and............... bringing a couple of Sue's fresh home made turkey sandwiches!!!!! Well I like the delivery girl too. But yea, Carolyn and Sue's little trip to Minto scored a turkey and therefore..... sandwich. Fresh.
Did I mention that I like turkey sandwiches? Well I do. Especially Sue's. Her and Carolyn went to Minto and got got a turkey at Foodland. She is making me a turkey sandwich or two today.
Carolyn is bringing them over. May hire police escort.
Ok, ok. Enough about that.
Nothing much planned medically today I don't think other than Physio coming back in to get me up on the high walker and perhaps if the breakthrough with my lower back continues, some transitioning from bed to wheelchair to (drumroll please) the flush. Ahhh! The flush. Even though you are my cold unfeeling friend how I cherish our relationship and you do not realize how much I've missed you. Well, in the next day or two I hope to rebuild the foundation of long lasting, UNINTERRUPTED liaison that'll fulFILL both of our expectations.
Anywho, everyone. I'll close on that note and later this evening send y'all the results of the day.
Later all,
Love
Wayne

Later all,
Love

Baby Steps
Kinda one of those rougher days where at the end things fall nicely into place.
The end result was sitting up in bed with pretty well my full weight placed on my hip and lower back without too much pain. Of course this was drug assisted but none-the-less, achieved. :).
So with that being said there is no need to go go over the rough edges. I can still carry them. Lots strong enough.
Was a really good day to recharge so Carolyn and I had talked about it and she spent the day in Chipman with the dawgs and of course with her Yogie and Sue. Had Sue for a drive to Minto. Not much room to squeeze a fart into that conversation on the way there and back. I bet it was great.
So hopefully tomorrow we can get back sitting and work on the transition from bed to wheelchair. I figure if we can do this, I'll be able to use my legs to pull myself around some and build strength. We'll see though.

Meds and Whack-a-Mole !!!!!
I'm a bit whacky today. Everything went well in surgery and my back is feeling much more stable. Just a matter now of strengthening and conditioning. So bear with me as I get my wits about me.
I got up on the high walker this afternoon, didn't walk but it felt good to get up. The physiotherapist is really nice.
It is always nice to see Carolyn and Yogie. Carolyn may stay home tomorrow and give us both a nice rechearge.
Dr. Charest visited and we talked about the surgery. He was pleased. Amazing what can be done. I'm hoping that I'll get to see the apparatus before I'm discharged

Disappointing
One thing I must say that has disappointed me is the total lack of contact with the Canadian Cancer Society. It seems to me that for all the money that is donated there should be a proactive approach to cancer patient support right from the outset. I've heard nothing and from some of the other patients I've spoken to, they've had the same experience. Programs with time restraints for travel support have limited time to respond and how are cancer patients and their families who are overwhelmed by the news that someone they love has cancer be expected to think about researching what support programs are available to them?
I'm not concerned about myself, I'm ok. There are so many others though that could use $500 allotted for travel. A pamphlet sitting in a slot near the nursing station shouldn't cut it. How much is donated to them each year?

Biz.......... eeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee
Been a wild 24 hours or so with not enough time nor internet access to get everything I want to up here on the Blog.
So noon tomorrow is surgery time. I'd tell you what they are going to do but someone would Google it and scare the proverbial crapola outta someone. I looked it up and it's kinda neat. Another room mate has come and gone. George from PEI made his way to another floor. I called him a pirate because his IV pole had four IV drip bags of various sizes hanging from it. I told him as he left I was going to play "Come Sail Away". He said he's glad I didn't because he'd be crying.
Long time roomie Sherman may be heading back to Blackville tomorrow. One more treatment. Once again Sherman is one "genuine" personality. Carolyn and I have enjoyed his soft spoken good nature and hopefully get up to the Howard Road to say hello this fall.
Carl starts his treatments soon. Once started he may get transferred to the Miramichi for treatment.
Like yesterday was incredible. I've been trying to find the words for what transpired but I'm still working on it.
So yesterday Becky, Kim, Gilles, Barry, George and Lynn, Glen and Ned were here from Air Ops. Darren and Mark from Region 3 East. And probably someone else........ it was a whirlwind.
Carolyn was here of course and then today............................................. Alex and Jade were here. That was really great. Super visit that helped make this to be one of my best here! Like I said on FaceBook they were thinking of going to the Zoo to see monkeys! Right after seeing ME! Don't know if I should be developing a complex or not? Anywho, I'm sure the monkeys will be entertaining and hopefully not too intellectually superior to AHEM!!!!!!
So wish me luck. I'm really looking forward to walking again!!!!
Nothing tomorrow I suspect with the surgery n all. Word will get out.

The Knife
Back surgery scheduled for Thursday! Dr. Charest was in yesterday and we went over the procedure and I gotz to ask many questions. After all was said n done I feel very confident I'll be mobile and relatively painless in another 5-7 days.
Basically the tumour has weakened my spine to the extent that it cannot support itself so some metal rods, bolts, springs, whatever has to be installed. My only worry is the hospitals proximity to Princess Auto!
Carolyn and I are excited about getting this surgery behind us and then getting home. What remains then are 21 day cycles of Chemo.
Big Jim Dobson was in today. Jim had smuggled salt packets and was going to go find the folks on low sodium diets and sell them for $2 a pop! Always an angle with Jim.

Puppy Visit!!!!
I was just dozing off and waiting for my got to bed meds when one of the nurses woke me up and brought her little chihuahua puppy in for a visit! Holy Crap what a surprise! They know I work for the NBSPCA and just figured I'd enjoy some dog time. The little critter was skittish as heck but just to give her (the puppy, not the nurse) a scratch behind the ear and a pat on the head was so great. Like I said, wonderful people here!
Can't wait for Carolyn's visit today! What a great day yesterday. Goal for today is to find out when my surgery will be. Well, I have another goal also but we won't go into detail. Tis between me and Mr. Pan.

Best hour of my life in a looooooooooooooonng time!
Wow. Carolyn just left a few minutes ago but from 1:30 - 2:30 she climbed into my bed and we just held each other. I had no pain as we snuggled together. It was fantastic.
Cueball
Oh oh! Spaghettios!
Was running my hand through my beard and with a lil tug noticed a LOT of beard hair coming out! Sooooooo I tugged on my scalp hair n YIKES! I knew a couple weeks back I wasted $20 on that haircut!!!!
Badge of Honour! May be Dew Rag wearin' Wayne here in a bit.
Great Saturday with Yogie and Sue over in in the afternoon. Thanked Sue for the fudge. Yummy! The good ole fashion brown sugar melt in your mouth kind that I suspect is illegal in several parts of the world! Delicious.
Kevin MacBeth stopped in for a surprise visit also and we yakked about the NBSPCA of course and my wanting to contribute more (feeling guilty). For those of you who don't know Kevin supervises the Animal Protection and Dog Control Officers in much of the southern parts of NB. And Jeff was back in for a quick visit.
Of course Carolyn was here for much of the day.Carolyn's visits seem like 20 minutes. She's here usually close to 4 hours but wow. So happy that time seems to just fly. Must be LOVE!
I went with Todd Beach's suggestion and the Teen Burger Combo from A&W. Bacooooooooooon!!!!!!!
A little sore in the evening but overall not too bad of a day. Thankful for all the well wishes n such. Donnie checks in regularly to see if I need anything and others also seem so willing to go out of their way. Like I said before, I have shed many a tear on this road but never a sad one.
Going to try to wash my hair on Sunday. What will be left? I'll take a photo.

A super fantabulous day! I went with the Big Mac Meal by the way.
Carolyn was here for over 4 hours but it seemed like 20 minutes. Arrrrgh! Colleen and Greg stopped by and kept me company which was excellent and the Shauna Billard who worked with me with the NBSPCA stopped by with a couple more books to keep my feeble mind occupied!!!
But the really big news was my buddy Pierson got to go home! Carolyn and I were so happy. Pierson was a great roomie and an inspiration to us all. Quite a guy.
Blood count is looking good and early next week we'll be able to talk to Dr. Charest about surgery options.
I'm counting the minutes til tomorrow when Carolyn comes back.
Woohoo............ the doctor said I was a young man!

Carolyn's on her way and I'm so excited. Missed her yesterday. We are ordering out today! I'm torn and still wondering what to get for dinner?
Deluxe Clams n Chips?
Pizza Delight Combo? (I love their Caesar Salads)
Big Mac Meal? (I know, I know. But the fires)
A & W Teen Burger Combo?
ALL OF THE ABOVE!!!!!!
Glorious Day out there today!
Just laying back here waiting for blood to get with it so they can get me mobile. Have a wonderful day everyone and please try to put a comment on my blog so I know things are working. Paul Blackmore got one on there but we are connected through Google. Just need to know it can be done through other methods or I have to change settings somehow. Thanx.

News today that blood platelet count is on the rise and when they reach a certain level Dr. Charest will operate. So it is a waiting game of sorts. Lori and Rob stopped in for a cool visit that I didn't expect. One their way to PEI for the weekend with a bunch of the Brown Family. Finally met our new Chief Animal Protection Officer, Gary MacAuley, and am looking forward to getting working with him. Danny Goddard snuck out of Region 3 for a visit also.
So there it is. Pierson may be heading home tomorrow. :)
That's it for now. I could blather on forever about the great folks here at Moncton City.

Carolyn has 2 weeks in NO SMOKING!
With my illness, her looking after everything at home including 3 dogs, and to on top of that deciding to quit smoking, she never ceases to brighten my day with smiles. She is amazing.
And a big shout out to Shyanne who goes up home and let's the 3 hounds out for business and plays with them, gives em their treats and really makes their day brighter allowing Carolyn to stay in Moncton with me a little longer.

Alright. A moments time near the end of another spectacular day. Way too much to post but here goes:
The girls from Physio came at about 10 AM and I had already done my exercises so they strapped me into a belt that they could hold on to AS I STOOD UP!!!!!! I could actually see the parking lot and people scurrying about! Another small victory. (simulate a fist pump everyone). Art and Phyllis drove Carolyn over this morning and had a great visit. Art and Phyllis visited Phyllis' sister Sharon after visiting with me. Carolyn as usual made sure I had everything I needed. More treats (Russell Stover from Sue) and cheesies for which I had a hankerin'. Really good day. My buddy Pierson had phenomenal news. Perhaps home on Friday. I am really hoping it works out. We knew all these little victories we reach every day turn into a huge one. That my FB friends and others who get my messages is the power of the positive flow of kindness and love. Awesome.
Dr. Mo stopped by and said that maybe Friday or Monday for my back surgery. Hoping for Friday of course. When Dr. Mo says any questions I just look to Carolyn. LOL.
Others in today were Dan Michaud a co-worker with DNR, Marguerite Diotte who worked for me as an Animal Protection Officer and is now taking a trucking course, Jeff Hay was in again and delivered some mail and news from Chipman.
Once again, a simply awesome day!!!! I am trying to start a Blog to document things a bit but wow, I have oodles of time but things just get piled up (literally). LOL.
Gotta stop now even though there is so much more I want to share. This journey gets more and more unbelievable each passing day. I am truly blessed and so very happy with my life. Thank You All.

Got to see all my inards on the CD the MRI folks gave me. Really neat. Last night they called to tell me they had sent the info to my Doc. Today she called to say she got them and to head for Emergency at Moncton City Hospital. Ask for Dr. Charest. Woohoo! I asked when. She said right away.
Carolyn's Dad Yogie drove me over. Got wheeled in and Yogie and I waited for Dr. Charest. I am finally being scheduled for this disc operation! Sweet Relief!
Dr. Charest dropped in and we talked for a sec. I gave him my CD and he left for a bit. When he returned he said "Well it is not a herniated disc and he suspected as much when he had spoken to my Doctor earlier in the day". He said Bone Cancer with a tumour attached to disc T12 and 3 others. There was also a 3 cm mass on one of my lungs. The severe back pain was of course attributed to that.
Reaction? Well I told him "That's not news you wanna hear". So we talked about getting me admitted and a biopsy scheduled. I called Carolyn (I think) and Yogie and I sat for a few more and I sent him home.

In the beginning........
This blog is intended to be of my journey, well, our journey. I will try to start this journey from the beginning when I first became aware I had cancer and follow the ups n downs. As we travel you may notice the words CancerSaddened together. I will explain the phrase as we move about. It is definitely not meant to be disheartening. but rather the opposite. It is not I who will be saddened, but Cancer itself. I have to work backwards to July 15th from a sometime foggy memory. Here goes.
July 15, Finally! An MRI. I won't go into how I got here but Carolyn and I are on our way to the private MRI Clinic in Moncton. Carolyn driving in Moncton? Yes indeed.
We made it, MRI finished and I even got me a copy. The MRI was a loud beast of a machine and they piped in music. The Tech gave me a little ball to squeeze in case I had a problem or panic attack as some people are very claustrophobic. The only time I thought about squeezing the ball over the 45 minutes of total stillness was when they played a Rick Astley song.
